There is a time of year around the Winter Solstice that is akin to the early morning hours of a new day. I get most of my insights into what’s going on in the world lying in bed in the early hours having just awoken from a full nights sleep. Suddenly the thoughts and dot connections come to me that provide the fodder for this blog.
Recently, it came to me that life is like that in this universe. In the days around Christmas when the light is changing from being the shortest day to the increasing daylight hours…humanity is more in touch with our spiritual side than at any other time of the year. That’s why Christmas takes place at this time of year. Probably the high points of all religions stretching back into antiquity beyond species memory took place at this time in the lunar calendar as well.
I suspect it has something to do with our evolution and our pineal gland that, according to some, used to serve as our “hive mind”–a sort of Internet of the mind–like bees have. Humans used to have a hive mind too…acting in unison and communicating subliminally–sharing insights and inventions across the planet at the same time. Perhaps our ‘hive mind communication’ capacity was best at this time of year. Perhaps that’s why the Druids built the Stonehenge.
So much we don’t know about our own species.
So, every year at this time, tangentially we come together in a fragile and fragmented spiritual cohesion around something higher and mysterious. Stories are told…ancient ceremonies are repeated. Reaching towards something we had–that has slipped beyond our grasp and is out there, beckoning us.
That’s all I can say about that. I need to get busy this Christmas Eve morning. Christmas is still on us–me and my 78 year old partner. So much to do–preparing the house for guests and the feast. Oh the feast! A Swedish smorgasbord of all kinds of European delicacies.
Wherever you are, beloved Sentients…I reach out to you in the spirit of our species to celebrate our spiritual capacity for love, learning, togetherness and joy.
Merry Christmas Everyone–and I will tackle my yearly New Years Predictions in a future post.
Stay tuned.
