Good Sunday Morning Beloved Sentients. We had our first real snowfall of the winter last night and today it’s a “winter wonderland” up here on the Malahat. The snowplough has not been around yet so it’s an inside day. All the better to tackle one of the biggest topics I’ve dealt with on this blog in a very long time. The looming Trump Tariff War on Canada. I have been on X for hours on end over the past week trying to educate the youngsters on the forum about the long history of tariff wars between Canada and the US. Other countries have sports competitions and real hot wars but Canada has tariff wars with the US. We’ve had many over the decades I’ve been following geopolitics and Canada has always responded to US tariff aggression in the same way: In kind. We match tariff for tariff and in that regard Canada has not responded any differently than usual.
What has made this Trump Tariff War more scary and more infuriating than normal is Trump’s several blatant lies about Canada which appeared to be geared to setting Canada up for a military invasion–in my mind at least.
IMO, Trump’s false accusations of Canada’s indebtedness to the US making it not have sovereignty and his false accusation that Canada has porous borders and is letting in fentanyl and illegal immigrants are the equivalent of the infamous canard told by the US at the UN Security Council that Iraq had “Weapons of Mass Destruction”–which was a false narratives/pretext constructed by the US for an invasion. Iraq was never able to convince the US it did not have them.
The Trump strategy is likely similar: Canada will never be able to convince the US that our border security/Tariffs are appropriate—False Flag incommming… Wake UP!
What I’ve found out since Donald Trump took office on January 20th is that he is a very big and very bad liar. Here are a few of his other lies just since taking office:
This one is kind of funny. Here is a recent headline circulating on the MSM:
Trump asks Musk to ‘go get’ astronauts stranded in orbit
Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have spent seven months in space instead of the originally planned eight days.
Someone on RT saw the headline and commented:
https://rt.com/news/611823-trump-asks-musk-bring-nasa-crew-back-iss/…
“Lucky that they took 25 times more food than they needed. Sorry, not buying this hoax.”
********
Folks, Americans [and most Canadians] are so stupid that they do not stop to think how much space would be taken up in an spacecraft to stock food and water for seven months! Not to mention where they would put all the shit!
********
The Trump Greenland Land Grab also has elements of black humour. According to the President of Denmark who endured a “horrendous” telephone call from Trump shortly after he took office, Trump’s argument to her as to why he wanted Greenland was because “We need it.” LOL…and I need to win the 25 million lotto this weekend!
Here is a bit from a recent MSM report on that still simmering crisis:
“…Copenhagen has declared that it will increase security around the territory following Trump’s claims. Speaking on Air Force One over the weekend, the president told reporters: ‘I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world. It’s not for us, it’s for the free world...”

Then of course there was the DeepSeek debacle of just last week where the Chinese uploaded an app onto cell phones that caused the US to lose a trillion dollars on the stockmarket in one day! I didn’t understand how this could happen until I read a good analysis from Mike Whitney on The Truthseeker.
Folks, remember when we used to see good alternative geopolitical analysis all the time on Twitter from writers like Mike Whitney? Now, with AI, all ‘created by humans’ material is being shoved off the platform. He only appears on shadow banned forums like “The Truthseeker” now.
Read what he has to say about DeepSeek:
Why everyone in AI is freaking out about DeepSeek. Venture Beat
“Mike Whitney – The Unz Review Jan 24, 2025 In a matter of days, the news of China’s AI sensation, DeepSeek R1, has gone from a gentle breeze to a Force 5 hurricane. It’s clear now that no one in Silicon Valley or Washington DC had the slightest idea that their world was about to be turned upside-down by an innovative new product that would shift the geopolitical plates further eastward. But that, in fact, is what has happened.
And it’s not simply because DeepSeek’s latest version matches or exceeds the performance of America’s best model, OpenAI; but because it is cheaper, more accessible and more transparent. This is AI for everyone regardless of their station or income. And its sudden emergence from ‘out of the blue’ has cast doubts on the ability of western tech giants to anticipate the capability of their competitors or to lead an industry that is essential for Washington to preserve its ever-loosening grip on global power.
Here’s a brief recap from Venture Beat: “….thanks to the release of DeepSeek R1, a new large language model that performs “reasoning” similar to OpenAI’s current best-available model o1 — taking multiple seconds or minutes to answer hard questions and solve complex problems as it reflects on its own analysis in a step-by-step, or “chain of thought” fashion.
Not only that, but DeepSeek R1 scored as high or higher than OpenAI’s o1 on a variety of third-party benchmarks…, and was reportedly trained at a fraction of the cost…, with far fewer graphics processing units (GPU) under a strict embargo imposed by the U.S., OpenAI’s home turf.
But unlike o1, which is available only to paying ChatGPT subscribers of the Plus tier ($20 per month) and more expensive tiers (such as Pro at $200 per month), DeepSeek R1 was released as a fully open source model, which also explains why it has quickly rocketed up the charts of AI code-sharing community Hugging Face’s most downloaded and active models.
Why everyone in AI is freaking out about DeepSeek? Venture Beat “Freaking out” is probably the understatement of the century. Silicon Valley is in a full-blown emotional meltdown and the path forward is far from certain. As we will see further along, western tech mandarins are going to have to return to Square 1 and modify their approach to the new reality.
In short, the agenda is being set by people with different priorities, values and beliefs who live 10,000 miles away. They do not ascribe to the idea that advances in technology should reinforce police-state surveillance or other repressive forms of social control.(as they do in the West) Their vision of the future is altogether different, but invariably optimistic.
Did you notice that “DeepSeek R1 scored as high or higher than OpenAI’s o1 (while) under a strict embargo imposed by the US”? In other words, these Chinese whiz-kids created their cutting-edge version with one hand tied behind their back. They shrugged off Washington’s onerous sanctions and beat Uncle Sam at his own game, which is quite an accomplishment.
(Forbes: “U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors were intended to slow China’s AI progress, but they may have inadvertently spurred innovation.”) Here’s more: …thanks to the fact that it is fully open source, people have already fine-tuned and trained many multiple variations of the model for different task-specific purposes such as making it small enough to run on a mobile device or combining it with other open-source models. Even if you want to use it for development purposes, DeepSeek’s API costs are more than 90% cheaper than the equivalent o1 model from OpenAI.

Greencrow continues: So, folks, Trump must be feeling that he’s up to alligators since returning to the Washington Swamp that he was supposed to drain.
Back to his issues with Canada. Was Trump cognizant that Canada has never in its history been more politically vulnerable than we are and have been for severl years? Most likely. Trudeau has fiddled while Canada burned for several years and now is into a fake retirement. The Supreme Court of Canada could have prevented the current leadership crisis in Canada altogether by hearing the Appeal of the Federal Court Mosely Decision of January 23, 2024 which rendered the Trudeau invocation of the Emergencies Act ultra vires [outside the law]. If they had heard this Appeal and dismissed it…Trudeau would have been gone by now and we’d have a new leader with a fresh mandate. The Supreme Court of Canada is finally going to hear this Appeal starting tomorrow in Ottawa.
The Federal Court of Canada is also going to hear the application to rescind the prorogation of Canada’s Parliament on February 13/14 and if that application is granted…the Parliament will resume and could vote Trudeau out by a non-confidence vote.
But currently, during the Trump Tariff War–Canada is virtually leaderless.
Canada Strikes Back
Below is a post I put on X on Friday. It certainly raised a ruckus for and against:
“This weekend is the weekend the US is bringing in their 25% tariff against Canada and Mexico. Coinkadynkally, it’s also the weekend that the worldwide boycott of McDonalds, Coke, Pepsi and a few other iconic American products/corporations starts. Denmark, Canada, Panama and Mexico will lead the way on this boycott.”
**********
Greencrow continues: The idea of Canada and the other nations recently targeted by Trump starting a citizens’ boycott of US products came to me as usual while lying i bed i the early morning hours. I had not seen anything about it anywhere but it certainly seemed like a logical progression…so I put it on X. Little did I know that just 24 hours later on Saturday, Trudeau would come on his TV Presser and announce the same thing…an encouragement of ordinary citizens to join in the response to Trump by boycotting US products. Folks, lol sometimes I scare even myself with my perspicacity. lol
Meanwhile, inklings of American discontent [rays of hope for Canadians] are beginning to glimmer on the US horizon:
Incompetence and chaos as Trump 2.0 crashes and burns | Opinion
“…We were led to believe that this time around Trump would have more loyal people around him and a well-oiled machine, with no one reining him in. The latter appears to be true but just because he has more devout people working for him doesn’t mean they’re always going to be able to get things done. In fact, their zealotry hinders them, causing them to act impulsively. They are the cut-throat kind of zealots who are clearly battling with each other, exemplified by the MAGA civil war. They’re keeping one another in the dark, including the president, who is clearly not in control, and working to undermine one another…”

Greencrow continues: So I have been on X practically non-stop trying to educate my fellow Canadians about Canadian history vis a vis tariff wars with the US. The youngsters today are so poorly educated they have no idea these tariff wars are old hat. They think it’s the first time and if we don’t kow tow to Trump’s lying allegations about Canada and his threats to take us over, we’re hooped! I have never seen so many Neville Chamberains, nervous nellys and yellow bellies in my life. So I and a few others have had to tell them facts and context, like the information printed below:
The Trump Tariff War with Canada
“Canada & USA “subsidy, deficit & trade,”
The United States does not directly subsidize trade with Canada in the manner often implied by the term “subsidize.” The confusion arises from the trade deficit, where the U.S. imports more goods from Canada than it exports to Canada, leading to a trade imbalance. In 2023, the U.S. had a trade deficit of about $41 billion with Canada. However, this trade deficit does not equate to subsidization. Instead, it reflects the nature of the trade relationship where Canada exports more to the U.S., particularly in energy sectors like oil and gas, due to comparative advantages.
Critics of the term “subsidy” in this context argue that a trade deficit is simply a result of consumer demand and economic dynamics rather than any form of financial aid or support from one country to another. This perspective is echoed by various analysts and commentators who argue that the U.S. benefits from this relationship through access to Canadian energy resources, which it imports at a lower cost, thereby enhancing U.S. energy security and supporting American industry.
Moreover, Canada imports significant services from the U.S., balancing the trade in non-goods sectors to some extent. Therefore, while there’s a trade deficit, it’s not accurate to say that the U.S. subsidizes Canadian trade. The relationship involves mutual benefits, with each country leveraging its strengths in different sectors….”
……….
Grencrow continues: Last night I had the shock of my life…well, not really but my reaction to Trudeau’s Presser where he announced Canada’s Tax Response to Trump’s Tariff War on Canada was certainly unexpected. I hate listening to him speak, can’t stand the sound of his voice even. But last night Trump gave a tour de force presentation of the Canadian position on the Trump Tariff War: The link to the video of the entire press conference is copied below:
https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/9.6632060
Here is what I posted on X immediately after the Presser:
“I just finished watching Trudeau’s tour de force response to Trump’s Tariff War pretext to take over Canada.
Everyone who follows my X account and my blog http://greencrowasthecrowfies.ca knows how much I dislike JFT.
I had to force myself to listen to the speech. But, I have to say this. I am totally shocked at my own reaction. Trudeau did a masterful job balancing between making it crystal clear to the US that Canada will not be rolled over and inspiring Canadians to join together to fight back.
Nobody could have possibly put our case forward better than he did tonight. Of course, I was happy to hear Trudeau say exactly what I’ve been saying all week…meeting tariff with tariff is the only way to respond to a bully and Canadians have to privately and resolutely join in the boycott by avoiding American goods and services. More about my shocking reaction in my next blog post once I have been able to absorb what he said and what it means.”
************
Greencrow concludes: Immediately following Trudeau’s presser, Mexico and China made announcements that they were also bringing in tariffs, starting the same time as the Canadian tariffs. I was elated and posted this on X.
“China and Mexico joining forces in the tariff war started by Trump against Canada. Folks what this is called in military parlance is a “pincer movement”.
The Canadian Twitterati still have their nickers in a twist this morning. The overwhelming majority of them are shaking in their boots waiting for Trump to “double” the tariff has he has threatened to do. I say “bring it on”. The ONLY way to deal with a bully is to fight tooth an nail, tariff with tariff. I always remember my mother telling us nine kids when we were small. “Don’t fight kids! But, if you HAVE to fight…then fight like hell!
Stay tuned.

Hopefully you did read my weekend rant as I laid it out how Canada supplies a heck of a lot of raw materials to the US, and how Canada’s present weakened position is due to our dependence on American finished products, a lot of food products, and services.. Those were made drastically worse thanks to TURDEAU and his lunatic WEF run policies..
The major trade issue is not with the US but the stupidity of Canadian provinces with their idiotic inter provincial trade barriers.. Lift that stupidity NOW and it will go a long way towards having Canada survive these US Tariff wars!
And yes, Canada is crippled due to its geography due to the massive Canadian Shield of solid exposed bedrock that has curtailed the building of true Canada only gas/oil pipelines between Alberta and Southern Ontario… The Pearson/Trudeau governments back in the 60’s investigated the cost of such a pipeline over the north shore of Lake Superior and the reports stated well over a BILLION in 1968 dollars, which did not sit well with the Liberal regimes, and thus such an undertaking was shelved.. Thus gas/oil from Alberta to industries in Ontario is at the mercy of having to go south through the US to get to Ontario.
Canada absolutely needs to fight back.. But it could cause the US to increase its threats to Canada including an ace in the hole of shutting off oil/gas to Eastern Canada.. Such an action in fact could escalate this into a real war…
I again am with you, young lady, in that Drumpf is more and more becoming a dangerous meglomaniac ! And he is now a threat to the whole world..

Hi NTS
I did read your Sunday Post and agree with you that Canada needs to get rid of interprovincial Trade Barriers ASAP.
I also agree on the need for a Cross Canada pipeline and suspect with all the improvements in tunneling technology that building a pipeline would not present the challenged it did formerly and this also needs to be done ASAP.
Moments ago Trump backed down and gave Canada the same “deal” he gave Mexico–30 days to come up with “solutions”. I will be writing more about this in my next post. But right now I’m crowing because I was the ONLY Canadian on X [in my loose group of regular communicators] who backed the Trudeau government in coming down hard on Trump with equal tariffs. All the rest of the Canadian posters were nervous nellies, yellow bellies and what I called Neville Chamberlains. They all wanted to “work” with Trump. I said “NO”! we’re not going to give away the store–even if some weak Canadians want us too. The only way to deal with a bully is to stand up to him. And I was right. CAW! CAW!
